Dog sledding, the Alaska state sport

Agility, frisbee, and lure coursing are popular dog sports in Arizona but the official dog sport in Alaska is dog sledding…check out some highlights here:

Take a trip to Juneau and a short scenic (that is a mild description of this beautiful wonderland) drive deep into the Tongass National Rainforest on Douglas Island. Hidden deep down a winding little road you find the summer training grounds for a team of Alaskan huskies just bursting with excitement. They know that once you board the custom-designed wheeled summertime sled, they get to run! And they tell you in every verbal pitch they can muster that they are ready to go!  The thrill of being pulled by these strong huskies, and the awe-inspiring beauty as you race down a one-mile trail surrounded by giant Spruce and Hemlock trees is exhilarating and breathtaking.  The ‘team’ is made up of sixteen dogs and every single one is happy to see you and happy to PULL!

We were lucky to get to meet the next generation of sled dogs while we were there and they are spotlighted in my video of the adventure…cute and sweet do not even begin to describe how wonderful they were!  The staff at the mushers camp are knowledgeable and friendly and are definitely in love with their dogs!  Great adventure and one I plan on doing again!  Visit Alaska Excursions for more details.

Did I mention they like to talk?

This is how they look when they are talking and singing to you....

That was awesome Amy, it was fun to watch and i am surprised that you do not have one of those puppies in your suitcase. Preston must be related to a husky, because that is how he looks when he howls too. I have a feeling that you enjoyed this trip more than anything else you have done in a long time. And you captured the feeling in all your photos you have shared here and on your other sites.
