Canine Red Carpet at Barrett-Jackson

A canine fashion show at a car show? That red carpet would probably be candy apple red!

The Barrett-Jackson car show is an annual event held in Scottsdale, Arizona.  The event plays host to over a quarter million attendees!  This year they added something new and it was called the Lifestyle Pavilion.  More than 225 vendors showcasing products and services such as automotive, luxury lifestyle products including men’s and women’s fashion, unique jewelry, clothing, furniture, artwork, collectibles, home entertainment, real estate, home builders, luxury motor homes, and even private aircraft. And PETS!  Now if you are familiar with Scottsdale then you know it’s a pretty fashionable place and has a ton of upscale shopping for people….but this year we turned Barrett-Jackson into the place to be for every fashionable pet and it all turned into the scene of the largest all-pet fashion show Scottsdale has ever seen…and by far one of the largest dog houses I have seen up close! So the whole day was just one huge, glamorous, fun-filled pet extravaganza!  The event showcased dozens of beautiful outfits for dogs to strut down the, uhh cat-walk right before my very eyes.  I had the luxury of a press pass with front row seats to capture all the action and stunning fashions.  The dog fashions were the custom designs of Barking Baby, where all the fashionable dogs shop!  From sequined hoodies to spring dresses with coordinating leashes to hats fit for the Kentucky Derby check out the show:

When we got there, they were still building the world's largest dog house...well probably just the largest one I have ever seen, but still very impressive. It was built by IMAGE Home Improvement. And the final stage was set and I had to admire that great logo again!

Andi Barness from Sonoran Living was the MC of the Pet Pawshion Show at Barrett Jackson last week. All these gorgeous pet fashions were made by Barking Baby. Barking Baby, Apparel & Accessories for Your Fashionable Dog!

This is Luna and Thumbilina, Luna is a therapy pony and Thumbilina is the smallest dog I have ever seen!

There was also a pretty impressive dog training demo by Your Dog Guru.  They use a no-force approach to dog training and their primary goal is to have your dog wanting to work for you and not against you!  So please take a look at Ben, a German Short Haired Pointer doing a pretty impressive little trick…May have to give these guys a call for dog training in the future!

Several vendors were on hand to showcase their products including PetsWeekly, Happy Tails Barkery (bakers of Mason approved treats), Bellas House/Pet Sitting, Smelly Dogs AZ, Horses Help, Gabriels Angels, Bowser Beer for Dogs!, CactusCanine, Barking Baby, Seven Dogs Grooming & Boutique and others!  Overall, I think the diva dogs had a great time, several posers in the group!  It was a great day for the fashionable dogs of Arizona!

Valentine’s Day for your furry friends!

Looking for that extra special gift for your favorite Valentine this year?  From now until February 29, 2012 I will be offering weekday sessions for $79!  This is for sessions held Monday-Thursday at three select east valley locations.  If you love my work, have no fear you will love the locations I have planned!  In addition to this special session pricing I have added two beautiful storyboards to go along with the Valentine Day season.  One is a 12×12 square design that features four to five images from your session and the other is a 10×20 that clearly expresses your love and devotion to your best friend.  Five images purchased separately would run you over $150 for prints alone…I am offering either storyboard for $95!  Each storyboard is printed on a super lightweight yet durable ‘standout’ and they are beautiful!  But hurry, the weekday pricing and the Valentine themed storyboards are going away at the end of February!  Samples of each storyboard and a brief description of a standout are shown below:

12x12 Storyboard features 4 or 5 images, heart-shaped image may be removed!

10x20 Storyboard features three images, perfect for the two dog family to express their love and admiration!

Description of a Standout Print...ready to hang the minute it is delivered to your doorstep!

Fan on facebook? Mention you read this blog post and I will include low resolution digital file of the storyboard for you to download and use on your personal facebook page!

Amy, I love the Stand out. How do I get one of these for Rex’s portrait?

Dawn RottaJanuary 19, 2012 - 1:35 pm

These are BEAUTIFUL, Amy!! Will be in touch to schedule a session for our mini Schnauzer for the last week of January/first week of February . I think one of these boards with Brimley’s pictures would be an awesome surprise for my hubby for Valentine’s!

My favorite photo…

This may very well be my favorite photo of my dog, Mason.

Why you ask?  Because five minutes earlier he looked like this….

it's mine stay away!

This was during a photo session for another client.  They allowed me to bring Mason along because he is very mellow and calm (can’t you tell??).  So, while I worked he found this stick to amuse himself with.  One of the best pieces of advice I can give any photographer…always look behind you, never know what you are missing.  And while this looks mean and menacing, he is just having a good ole chew on a stick, no bad behavior was played out that afternoon.  Love you Mason!

Ranch Horses | Working Ranch Photography

Ranch horses have life made.  Living on a working ranch offers these majestic beasts the best of both worlds.  I have a few horses of my own but I don’t consider myself highly knowledgeable in horse behavior, but I do believe that horses, like dogs, prefer life when they have a job to do.  Ranch horses enjoy wide open fields with plenty of space and plenty of things to keep them entertained.  But put the saddle on them and it’s time to get to work.

I was fortunate enough to do a photography workshop with the fabulous Bev Pettit at the V Bar V Ranch in Rimrock, Arizona last month.  Bev is a fabulous western fine art photography and she made herself available for two complete days to talk photography and western style art with the group of forty or so photographers.  The staff at V Bar V Ranch allowed us to mingle with their horses and cattle all while snapping and composing photographs from all sides. It was a great adventure and I wanted to share a few of the images I captured at this true western style working ranch.

Corgi Calandar Canvas winner is…

I must admit I am way behind on posting this.  Time really gets away from me once the Arizona heat goes away and I can get back outside and play with my dogs!  IT really seems like it was just yesterday that I went to the corgi picnic to deliver the canvas.  As it worked out, this years winner and I passed each other coming and going and I made arrangements to meet her at a local restaurant to deliver the canvas.  So the big reveal….the winner of the 20×24 canvas was….

Fox Red Retrievers

The Labrador Retriever is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of “gun dog.” A breed characteristic is webbed paws for swimming, useful for the breed’s original purpose of retrieving fishing nets. The Labrador is the most popular breed of dog by registered ownership in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States (since 1991).  Typically, Labradors are athletic and love to swim, play catch and retrieve games, are good with young children, elderly, and for protection.  So, all that is fairly common information about Labs, then I met Rex.  Did you know that labs can be red?  Neither did I.  Well sure enough a fox-red Labrador is actually a shade of yellow.  Interest in these darker shades of gold and fox red started to gain popularity by English breeders in the 1980s.

Labrador Retriever

There are significant differences between field and trial-bred (sometimes referred to as “American”) and show-bred (or “English”) lines of Labradors, arising as a result of selective breeding. Dogs bred for hunting and field-trial work are selected first for working ability, where dogs bred to compete in conformation showsare selected for their conformation to the standards and characteristics sought by judges in the show ring.  While individual dogs may vary, in general show-bred Labradors are heavier built, slightly shorter-bodied, and have a thicker coat and tail. Field Labradors are generally longer legged, lighter, and more lithe in build. In the head, show Labradors tend to have broader heads, better defined stops, and more powerful necks, while field Labradors have lighter and slightly narrower heads with longer muzzles. Field-bred Labradors are commonly higher energy and more high-strung compared to the Labrador bred for conformation showing, and as a consequence may be more suited to working relationships than being a family pet.

Who knew they had so many varieties?  I have always loved Labs and many years ago I adopted one from my local animal shelter and loved her deeply.  She was a wonderful companion who I often referred to as the Velveteen Rabbit due to the softness of her coat.  My infatuation with the breed has only increased with meeting Rex.  His marking are unique and beautiful.  As you can see he was a great model and I enjoyed my session with him immensely.  Thank you to Rex and his owner for enlightening me on all things Labrador!

Puppy Love Part 2

Are words really needed with this post?  I mean this is the face of total devotion and he is only three months old.  What a beauty.  What a wonderful job I have.

This is Bronco.  He was my foster dog for a very short time and was adopted at the Franciscan Renewal this past weekend in Phoenix.  He was available from Best Friends Animal Society and he has a couple of sisters still available if you are interested.  Have a wonderful life little guy, you were truly amazing.

Dog sledding, the Alaska state sport

Agility, frisbee, and lure coursing are popular dog sports in Arizona but the official dog sport in Alaska is dog sledding…check out some highlights here:

Take a trip to Juneau and a short scenic (that is a mild description of this beautiful wonderland) drive deep into the Tongass National Rainforest on Douglas Island. Hidden deep down a winding little road you find the summer training grounds for a team of Alaskan huskies just bursting with excitement. They know that once you board the custom-designed wheeled summertime sled, they get to run! And they tell you in every verbal pitch they can muster that they are ready to go!  The thrill of being pulled by these strong huskies, and the awe-inspiring beauty as you race down a one-mile trail surrounded by giant Spruce and Hemlock trees is exhilarating and breathtaking.  The ‘team’ is made up of sixteen dogs and every single one is happy to see you and happy to PULL!

We were lucky to get to meet the next generation of sled dogs while we were there and they are spotlighted in my video of the adventure…cute and sweet do not even begin to describe how wonderful they were!  The staff at the mushers camp are knowledgeable and friendly and are definitely in love with their dogs!  Great adventure and one I plan on doing again!  Visit Alaska Excursions for more details.

Did I mention they like to talk?

This is how they look when they are talking and singing to you....

That was awesome Amy, it was fun to watch and i am surprised that you do not have one of those puppies in your suitcase. Preston must be related to a husky, because that is how he looks when he howls too. I have a feeling that you enjoyed this trip more than anything else you have done in a long time. And you captured the feeling in all your photos you have shared here and on your other sites.
